A Plea For Civility

April 3rd, 2008 // Categorized under: Real Estate News

By Jan Edmundson, Chief Marketing Officer with Windermere Real Estate

As I digested the latest government/business/sports/entertainment high profile person saying “I’m sorry,” I started reeling from the onslaught of blogs and television “personalities” speculating, gossiping, hypothesizing and generally pontificating on how bad this person was.

Our media has taken on a role that I find troubling. That role is the apparent need to define “news” as gossip. Our reality TV and blog culture has created a mass lack of respect for our fellow citizens. The media has decided that we all need to know the back story on any one in the public eye. And when that is not enough the media goes after joe public (who used to be a private citizen).

What has happened to our basic civility?

Now, you may be wondering why I would use this forum to ask this question. The simple answer is that Windermere wins because of the way we treat each other and our customers.

We believe in old fashioned values like dignity, honesty, integrity and grace.  And we must never lose sight of that. We are a relationship company. The biggest portion of our business comes from referrals. And referrals come from customers who have become evangelists.

And our customers become evangelists when we treat them like, well, human beings. Let’s never forget that

  1. Jonathan Bunn - Ashburn VA Real Estate

good point Jan. freedom of the press is a 2 edged sword. agents have to step up to the plate and look after the customer with “old fashioned values.”

  2. Scenic City Scoop - Chattanooga Tennessee Real Estate Blog

Hello Jay, great article and I am with you. I don’t need to know everything there is to know about Britney Spears or our government official’s 2nd cousin twice removed problems with their obsession of chocolate. It is just not my style. It is important that we use those old fashion values we learned when growing up, our customers appreciate it. Keep up the great blog.

I’m with you guys on this one. The lack of basic manners and civility in this nation of ours is very troubling. We see it in the way people drive so aggressively, the way they walk through doors (and not hold them for others), and yes, even in the way people behave to one another in our real estate industry. It can be rather discouraging, but I guess the only thing we can do is set the best example we can.

Anyway…great blog, Rich, and I’ll check back often to keep up with the real estate news from San Diego.
